Abstract

Introduction

The first part (A) of this CD-ROM contains a complete description of the anatomy of the lower urinary tract. The individual anatomical structures are introduced step by step. At the same time a scheme is developed that, basing on a three-dimensional computer model, allows a direct visualisation of the described muscular structures. Corresponding genuine histologies are shown at the respective levels. In the "Picture Library" section all the used original histological preparations are listed, displayed and explained in detail. In the sections 7 and 8 the existence of two anatomical structures described in the literature is critically put into question. It is proved by histological cross-sections that the so-called Musculus transversus perinei profundus does not exist at all. Furthermore, the computer animation in combination with the corresponding preparations demonstrates clearly, that the so-called ´loop system´ of the Musculus sphincter vesicae (interal sphincter) is the artificial result of an inadequate investigation technique. The final result is a three-dimensional model that visualises the complex muscular structures of the distal urinary tract.

The results of several years of histological studies, as presented and described in part A, have been published as five successive papers in the "Urologia internationalis" in 1994. These papers are presented complete with all the published figures and histological pictures in part B of this CD-ROM. The anatomical structures are explained and described in full detail. Furthermore, a new theory of urinary continence, micturition and ejaculation is developed, basing on the numerous histological findings, e.g. the description of the exact location and structure of the Musculus detrusor vesicae and Musculus sphincter vesicae and the first-time description of muscular structures like the Musculus sphincter urethrae glaber (smooth-muscular part of the external sphincter), the Musculus dilator urethrae or the Musculus ejaculatorius. This theory is described in the five papers of part B.
